I’ve seen others but this is THE one to get. It is the only automatic opener and it requires no effort to use…just push a button. The quality is outstanding. Makes a great gift.

Love The Zipit! I tried one of the other manual clamshell openers but this is much better. All you do is push a button and let the zipit do all the work. It’s like an electric can opener for packages. It is wisely designed in a way that keeps your hand away from the sharp package “shrapnel” so you do not cut your fingers. I can’t wait to use this for Christmas!

For the first time I can open things without tugging and tearing up my hands. Better then pen knives or anything else I have tried. Not sure if it will work on the few pkgs that do not have even seems on the sides, but most of the pkgs i need to open do have the kind of sides this will open. It was NO problem and was fast and easy.

Initial Review of the Zipit Blister Pack/Clamshell Opener

I just received my Zipit Blister Pack/Clamshell Opener. Yes, I was mesmerized by the awe-inspiring video that shows the can opener-like blades effortlessly slicing and dicing their way through the meanest blister packs. Delivery via UPS was quick, however my initial box-opening experience was not very pleasant.

The package from Amazon arrived in very bad condition. It look like that it had been opened, and then re-taped haphazardly. Additionally, the sides and corners of the box were heavily dented — never a good sign when receiving electronic goods through UPS.

Inside this box was another smaller, institutional brown cardboard box with a simple label that said “THE ZIPIT #ZIPIT103″. This box, needless to say, was also poorly taped shut. Opening this smaller box, I found the actual Zipit device. It was placed inside a rather worn bubble wrap baggy (most of the bubbles were already popped). I guess it makes sense not to package a “blister” cutter inside a “blister” styled plastic container, but this poor attempt at packaging gave me a bad impression. Along with a faded two-sided instructional card (more on that below), that was all what was in the box.

The Zipit itself looks like it was previously used. The green and purple plastic components were covered with oily fingerprints/splotches and some kind of sticky gunk. The faded and poorly-worded instructional manual (basically just a small sheet of paper printed on both sides) appeared as if it was printed on someone’s home inkjet that badly needed new ink cartridges. Although it was difficult to read, I kind of liked that that the instructions confidently stated:

“We have taken numerous measures in quality control to ensure that the Zipit arrives in top condition.”

Hmmph…not feeling too confident about this product so far.

The instructions advised you to remove the clear “safety cap” prior to use. However, the safety cap had a continuous groove on one side, completely exposing the two circular blades. Large adult fingers would not be able come into contact with the blades, but little kids’ inquisitive hands would have no problem in getting inside and being sliced. It looks like designers originally envisioned the Zipit effortlessly slicing plastic packaging by inserting the blister edges into the groove on the cap….however they now decided to call it a safety cap and advise its users to take it off before cutting.

I get the impression that the Zipit was rushed to production before being fully tested and marketed.

Since I don’t have batteries yet, I have not been able to test its purported cutting functions. Based on my “OOBE” (Out OF Box Experience), I am not too confident that it will live up to its hype. Stay tuned for more info.

I just received my Zipit and I was pleasantly surprised to see it did NOT come in a clamshell package. You need 2 AA batteries to use The Zipit. I had to play with it for a minute before getting it to work just right but the included instructions give very good guidance. If I had bothered to read them before trying to use it myself I would have been better off. There are some good tips in there. Once I got it to work, it was FANTASTIC! For a mother who has cut several fingers trying to open those stupid clamshells this was a breath of fresh air. I am actually looking forward to the next clamshell I encounter. One more use that is NOT mentioned in the instructions…when used with the safety cap on you can easily cut open envelopes, even the thicker package envelopes. A nice added bonus.
